I love summer and so does Cthulhu

Summer Fun Cthulhu! Speaking of summer, it looks like that guy in the back of the photo could use some extra sunlight.

Ah … what is that thing, exactly?
It is a Cthulhu of the Summer Fun variety.
Cthulhu. Eldritch abomination and elder god. With tentacles. To comprehend his nature is to go insane.
Created by the master of modern horror, H. P. Lovecraft. Obviously a very cheerful guy.
Oh. Thanks for the explanation.
Cthulhu (err… “Icthulhu”) also appeared in Justice League. (Lovecraft died in 1937, so his material would have been public domain at that time. But a producer mistakenly thought the material was still copyrighted, so they went with Icthulhu instead of Cthulhu).
Marvel and DC each own a couple of characters that are basically Cthulhu with a name change, like Shuma Gorath, who I remember from the Marvel vs Capcom games. I believe they have unique names so that they are easier to copyright as a character.
That certainly sounds plausible. It also makes it easier to distinguish your continuity from everything that happened in the Lovecraft stories.
Cthulhu even appeared in an episode of ‘The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy’, he was kidnapping people through phone lines. But their shoes couldn’t go through because shoes can’t fit through phones (WTF?).
It was a surreal episode. Then again, so was the entire show.
