A failure of product design… in pasta!

Published by at 4:25 am under Product Design

I recently bought Barilla’s smallest box of orzo.  According to the nutritional information on the side, this tiny box contains eight servings totaling 1600 calories.  If I added sauce and a drink, that’s far more than an average person could eat in a single sitting.  A well-designed box of orzo would have provided directions for how to prepare only half of the pasta.  But the label only included directions for how to cook all of the orzo.  Congratulations, Barilla; you have managed to screw up the product design for a box of pasta.

That’s because the packaging was designed with rapacious Hobbits in mind. And didn’t you learn your “divided by eight” table in grade school?
