Book Request
I'm a former assistant editor with advice about how to write novels, comic books and graphic novels. Most of my content applies to fiction-writing in general, but I also provide articles specifically about superhero stories.
What are some well-known books that have major flaws? We’re looking for books to use to help our readers improve their writing, so I’d especially appreciate books that are superhero-related, fantasy or sci-fi.
Lord of the Rings. The characters are extremely bland, the writing is longwinded and occasionally aggravating, and the flaws of practically every character are blamed on a ring; no one seems to have flaws of their own accord.
Good call on LOTR! I had considered it, but initially demurred because I feared that a negative review would anger its fans. Still, what you said about its insufferable long-windedness and characterization is dead on. I’d lay at least half of the terrible fantasy writing out there at Tolkein’s feet… particularly those scenes where people sit around and eat.
One of Christine Feehan’s books. Anyone whose readers are that defensive is obviously up to no good.
