To be fair, I think that death had been cheapened in comics before Superman died and returned.
How so, B. McKenzie?
Some examples:
–DC killed off Batman’s butler Alfred in 1964 and replaced him with Aunt Harriet. He came back to life in 1966 (I think Detective Comics #356), courtesy of a regeneration ray. He also did a brief stint as a supervillain.
–Dr. Doom has been “killed” so many times I don’t even know where to begin. That goes back to at least the 1970s.
–I’m pretty sure Joker died in his first appearance (Batman #1) in 1940. He accidentally stabs himself while fighting Batman. He was brought back to life almost immediately.
—A Death in the Family killed off Robin by a vote in 1988. I think it cheapens death to relegate it just to a popularity contest.
