Yeah, I’m looking forward to seeing some sample pages or perhaps a synopsis or something.

Sorry about the delay. ^^; We had someone hit a power pole near by, lost power for a bit. The people are also alright as far as I know. I’m scrounging my pieces together. I should have something up shortly.

Very interested to see some of your work

I’ll begin with the basics. First and foremost, thank you for taking an interesting in my forum. Thank you to the creators of this site for lettings me have a forum. Hopefully I won’t do too miserably.
I’m attempting Scraps as a novel, it seems to fit better than a comic. Though I’d dearly love to see it as a comic too.

I’m aiming for ‘adult’ readers I suppose. I refuse an age number because a lot of people don’t fit in the ‘standard’.

    There’s also bound to be a bit of foul language in my story. Alex has a potty mouth. ^^;
    The World:
Currently this story universe is called Scraps. I may or may not change it. In this world Superheroes and powers exist. Science is… a bit more advanced than our world, for the consumers and geniuses are capable of some scary advanced things.
    The Main Story:
(Well at the first ‘arc’ of the story.)
Alex is a average girl, not in the ‘average-but-still-has-cool-powers’ way, but really average. Okay, she does have a photographic memory… Anyway the story follows Alex, as the local hero seems to stop caring and a new villain shows up. She piles together some scrap armor, some eBay gadgets and takes off into heroism. It will be a long tough journey for her. (I’m intending to be pretty mean.)
    Major Characters:
(I’ll only give a bit about them here. And will go further in depth a bit later.)

    Alex – 16
Alex works in her father’s scrap yard, keeping the business up as best as she can. In her spare time she takes scraps and pieces together ‘art’.
She is very strong willed, creative and hardworking. She comes of a little harshly but genuinely cares for people and enjoys defending them.

    Darryl – 48
Alex’s father. He’s a bit older than you would expect and he’s still in the edges of depression. He runs a scrap yard that takes in junk from everywhere, including the military at times.
When he was better he was a very gentle person, caring and intelligent.

    Amanda – deceased
    Alex’ mother, deceased.
She was a coarse woman, loud and crude at times. Alex inherited her strong will and protective nature from Amanda.

    Beau – 34
The best friend of Alex’s father. He’s living with Alex and Darryl, trying to help while Darryl is still in depression. He helps Alex run the scrap yard and runs his own business. He’s a semi-successful scientist.
Beau is the guy ‘every one likes’; calm under pressure, down-to-earth and sweet. He’s the guy you find helping old ladies across the street, even when he’s late to his own business meetings. Alex turns to him often, for his brains and experience.

    Andromeda – 17
Alex’s rival so to speak. Andromeda goes to the same school as Alex and the two can’t seem to stand each other.
Andromeda very assertive, driven in a way. But she is tempered a touch by a strong feeling of justice and a touch of naivety. She’s rich and a bit spoiled, she doesn’t understand what it is to be without.

    Cliff – 12
Cliff is Alex’s best friend. A complete and certified genius. He graduated high school at 9, and decided to wait a few years before hitting college. He really looks up to Alex. You only get to see him for a few pages in the first arc, as he is leaving for college.
Cliff is dedicated in his work(whatever he chooses), but cocky and a smart-ass at times. He’s still a sweet and charming boy when he wants to be.
    Major Heros:

    Scrapheap or Scraps: (Alex)
Alex dons dark clothes, later a body suit, and a few bits of hodgepodge armor from the scrap yard. She covers her head completely. Her ‘weapons’ aren’t much, a net gun, her mom’s old taser and some homemade smoke bombs to start. Her arsenal will later contain much more.

This dark-haired man is the local superhero. He dresses in black and deep blue. Able to create energy blasts of varying size (not too large though), energy shields and fly. These powers came from being experiment to augment his natural ability, energy reading, which he lost in the process.
Though the public does not know it, Dynamo’s powers have been slowly eating away at his psyche. He experiences blackouts, and has been turning to evil. These deeds are keep secret by posing as a new villain.
Not sure if I should put any up just yet. One or two I really want to keep. X3
Things without a home -or- Ideas I’m considering:

Cliff will return later, with many college degrees. He’ll be helping Alex. He might have a crush on her for a while too.

Darryl will wake from depression at some point and go in a similar vein as Cliff. Helping Alex.

Andromeda is possibly going to be a hero as well.

Alex will most likely never have powers. The only thing I’m even considering for a ‘power’ is a gradual building of immunity to electricity or heat.

The public hates Scrap for the most part. As she is seen ‘fighting against’ Dynamo. They’re sure she’s a villain.

Alex is developing a dislike for heroes. x3

I like cliff I had a character like him before cept he had telepathy/telekinesis though. I think its cool the hero is turning into the villain and scrap has to fight him while the public dislikes her,it gives her a sort of anti hero feel. The one question that I have is are there more heroes than scrap and Dynamo?

  7. Dr. Maladyon 19 Oct 2010 at 5:11 pm

In general yes. Though the ‘biggest’ hero is Dynamo, at least for the first arc. Which is defeating Dynamo and establishing Scraps as a kind of hero. Some minor ones will be bound to pop up, but I haven’t got them noted out yet. And I wanted to try add stick to the ‘main’ characters.

Cool, cool I like where its at so far. Id love to read more whenever you post them 😉

    Very interesting! 😉 More, please!

One thing I’m noticing is that (so far) it looks like some of the characters might be a bit more three-dimensional if they had some stronger flaws. For example, Alex “comes off a little harshly,” but otherwise seems pretty uniformly positive. Beau is supersweet and uniformly nice. Darryl was typically gentle and caring before his depression. (Admittedly, he may be a nasty jerk now, so depending on how rough his edges are now, he may actually be rather flawed).

Andromeda seems interesting. She doesn’t strike me as an 100% stereotypical rich bitch. The justice and touch of naivety will probably help her feel more three-dimensional.

Likewise, Cliff’s smartassery and cockiness should help him feel a bit more than just a stereotypical boy genius.

So my main recommendation would be coming up with some ways Alex and maybe Beau might start conflicts with the people around them. Maybe Beau gets upset that it looks like she isn’t doing enough to help her father (because she’s busy saving the city).

I like the idea of the hero creating a separate villainous persona to hide his mental degradation.

    I think I should check this more often shouldn’t I? ^^; I wasn’t expected a response quite so quick.

*pokes and prods the characters* You are right about some of them.

Darryl at this time is just hollow… I didn’t get very far with him. I’m thinking that his age plays into his weakness quite a bit. And delving into the WHY of his depression he’s very people dependent. The depression could also hang around, as though he’s really working through it at all times. Hmmm….

Alex and her ‘comes of a little harshly’, well I meant that more of. She’s rude and crude, but not one of the three female personalities I loathe, a.k.a Heinous Bitch. Most of her flaws are experience and lack of powers. But making her cruder does help.

Beau…………… ummm. I was debating terribly against saying anything. I suppose it’s up to the forum viewers. Cause Beau has a plot point and you might not want to hear it if you’re going to actually read the story.

So if anyone cares about spoilers say so. I guess I could e-mail the people you don’t mind. And I’m not trying to be coy with this information, you’ll see when you have it.

  12. B. Macon 25 Oct 2010 at 12:33 pm

If you’d like to share Beau’s secret, cool. If not, I’m satisfied knowing you have something in mind for him. 😀

One minor quibble about names… Alex, Andromeda, and Amanda start with A’s. I don’t think anyone’s going to mess up Alex with Andromeda (because Andromeda is so unusual), but I think it might help to make Amanda a bit more distinct from Alex. Preferably something that starts with a different letter. (Also, Andromeda and Amanda end with the same letter).

PS: I’m glad to see that you’ve gotten a quick response.

  13. Dr. Maladyon 25 Oct 2010 at 6:26 pm

Oh the names… The names posted are the names they are commonly called.

Alex right now is name Euphenia Alexandria Darling. Named for a grandmother…

And Andromeda is Alexandria Andromeda (haven’t got a last name yet).

There was going to be something about Alex and Andromeda sharing a name. Starting trouble between the two. Not so sure about that anymore.

Amanda though, I just can’t find something fitting. I don’t suppose there are any suggestions?

  14. B. Macon 25 Oct 2010 at 10:09 pm

“There was going to be something about Alex and Andromeda sharing a name. Starting trouble between the two. Not so sure about that anymore.” If so, it could be that one character or the other picks her own name because she feels her given name doesn’t fit her well enough. (IE: Jacob Gatz renamed himself Jay Gatsby because he thought that something sexy and sleek fit better).
