The conservative Washington Times reports on the latest feud between Senators Obama and Clinton.

“It sounds more like McCarthy,” Gen. McPeak said. “I was going to college when Joe McCarthy was accusing good Americans of being traitors, so I’ve had enough of it.”

Clinton campaign spokesman Phil Singer rejected the comparison, saying Gen. McPeak was “clearly misinterpreting” the words and might be trying to divert attention from anti-American statements by Mr. Obama’s church mentor.

A posting on Mrs. Clinton’s Web site said the former president was talking about the need to keep the race focused on issues, “rather than falsely questioning any candidate’s patriotism.”

Say what?

The spokesman says that the Obama campaign is “misinterpreting” words that were purportedly designed to keep the race focused on issues and then in pretty much the same breath says that it might all be an effort to distract us from Wright’s anti-American remarks.

It’s important to note that the controversial line– might be diverting attention from anti-American statements– is the Times’ paraphrasing of the speaker rather than a direct quote. The actual quote is probably softer than that. I hope it’s softer than that.
